DEULA Nienburg Participates in the FAO Africa Conference on Sustainable Agricultural Mechanisation

by Nane Meyer

DEULA Nienburg took part in the FAO Africa Conference on Sustainable Agricultural Mechanisation and used the event to exchange views with international experts on the future of sustainable agricultural mechanisation in Africa. The conference brought together representatives from educational institutions, ministries, development organisations, and agricultural practice.

The focus was not only on the use of modern technology, but above all on the conditions under which mechanisation can be effective and sustainable in the long term. A key takeaway from many discussions was clear: without well-trained skilled professionals, even the best technology cannot reach its full potential.

Sustainable mechanisation requires qualified training

The conference highlighted that Sustainable Agricultural Mechanisation goes far beyond simply providing machines. What matters is that people on the ground are able to select appropriate technology, operate it safely, and maintain it professionally. Only then can productivity be increased without unnecessarily putting soils, water resources, or the climate under additional pressure.

However, many African countries still lack structured training and continuing education opportunities in agricultural engineering and mechanisation. This often results in long downtimes or reduced machine lifespans, inefficient workflows, and avoidable environmental impacts. Accordingly, there was strong consensus among participants that vocational education, hands-on training, and the qualification of trainers must be an integral part of any mechanisation strategy.

Practical experience: DEULA Nienburg’s contribution

DEULA Nienburg contributed its many years of experience in practice-oriented training and further education. Discussions with international partners made it clear that the close link between theory and hands-on application is seen as a major added value. Training models that combine education, occupational safety, and environmental aspects attracted strong interest.

Topics discussed included modular training concepts for agricultural machinery, programmes to qualify teaching staff, and standards for safe and resource-efficient machine use. The role of mechanisation in the context of climate adaptation and sustainable development was also a recurring theme.

Education as the foundation for sustainable development

Participation in the event showed that solid technical and vocational education is a decisive success factor for sustainable agricultural mechanisation. It ensures that investments in technology deliver lasting impact, local competencies are developed, and farms are equipped for the future.

The FAO Africa Conference thus made clear that Sustainable Agricultural Mechanisation is above all a matter of knowledge, qualifications, and long-term education efforts. DEULA Nienburg feels confirmed in this approach and aims to continue contributing its expertise to international education and cooperation projects in the future.
