Background

One Health is a concept initially promoted by FAO, OIE, and the WHO, that seeks to join forces to combat public health threats arising from interactions between animals, humans, and the environment. The COVID-19 pandemic once again demonstrated the importance of the animal-human-health interface in the emergence of infectious diseases. Most pandemics have a zoonotic origin, and knowledge of the determinants associated with them must form the basis of prevention strategies. However, so far this approach has been confined only at a broader policy level and to the academia, with research not yet entering the agricultural vocational education and training sector, and to the workers who interact with animals and the environment.

Project

The LIVET project aims at developing and pilot testing an innovative VET curriculum at EQF 5 level focused on the management and practical application of the One Health principles into the livestock farming and animal husbandry sector.

The project will develop:

  • an xMOOC at EQF 5 level on the adoption of the One Health approach into the livestock farming sector
  • three Specialisation courses at EQF 5 level on Animal Welfare, Zoonoses, and Antimicrobial Use and Resistance
  • an Autumn School on One Health, Resilience Skills, and Integrated Risk Management
  • and a period of work-integrated learning for 60 learners

The project will also develop a new One Health Advisor qualification profile, and a VET curriculum related to such profile. The target groups of the project are graduates of agricultural technical vocational education institutions, undergraduate students in agriculture or veterinary science yet to complete their degree, advisors, consultants, technicians or supervisors of livestock farms, and specialised livestock workers with management roles.

The role of DEULA-Nienburg

DEULA is a VET centre for specialists aimed at influencing process management in agriculture, as well as technical innovations such as the production of wind, biogas, and photovoltaic energy. It is Work Package Leader for Work Package 1 and as such will coordinate the other partners in the tasks of:

Analysing and examining the livestock farming sector at a national and European level to assess the needs and gaps of the sector from a One Health perspective.

Developing a qualification profile for the definition of the role of One Health Advisor based on the needs and gaps assessed.

Producing and delivering an online survey aimed at assessing the existing professional needs.

Output
  • To develop a comprehensive, standardised VET curriculum and a set of training materials on the One Health approach for managers, future managers, and professionals in the livestock farming sector.
  • To upskill and reskill the agricultural labour force and professionals, so as to ease the labour market uptake of One Health practices that can strengthen food safety and improve public health.
  • To strengthen the relationship between research, academia, VET Providers, the labour market, and policymakers in order to facilitate the diffusion of innovative approaches in livestock farming in order to address economic, social, and environmental sustainability issues.
